Fire crews working second wildfire in Smith Creek area near West Kelowna
Smoke is visible in the Smith Creek area near West Kelowna and firefighters are on the scene. There was another fire in the area earlier today that was handled by BC Wildfire Service, according to West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund who said this current fire is nearby. “It's in the same vicinity as earlier today, but it's in a different location,” Brolund said. West Kelowna firefighters arrived on the scene just before 3 p.m. today, Aug. 13. Brolund said the fire is outside of West Kelowna Fire Department’s jurisdiction so BC Wildfire Service is leading the situation. The status is out of control, but it’s at 0.009 hectares, or 90 square metres, according to the wildfire service website. It's not known if any structures or infrastructure is threatened. No one from the wildfire service was immediately available to provide more information about the blaze. Kelowna is under a severe thunderstorm watch with a 40 per cent chance of showers. The wind is expected to pick up to 60 km/h later this afternoon. So far, no cause has been listed for the fire, and there are no area restrictions or evacuation alerts.
