Parking payment scam pops up in Penticton

Penticton RCMP want folks to be on the lookout for a QR code parking scam. Fraudsters stick a QR code on a parking meter, sign or pay station that takes people to a fake website that looks like a legitimate parking payment system, according to an RCMP media release issued today, Aug. 6. Victims think they are paying for parking but they're putting their financial information into a scam site which steals the information. Police said the scam is popping up around the country. The City of Penticton uses the Passport Canada Parking app https://www.penticton.ca/city-services/transportation/parking which does not use a QR code. Police are asking people to report any QR code claiming to be part of a parking payment system. Do not scan QR codes for parking payments in Penticton, and if you think you have scanned a suspicious QR code you can report it to the RCMP. Anyone can report a scam QR code to the Penticton RCMP non-emergency line at 250-492-4300.
