Fire at Kamloops landfill billows dangerous smoke

Black smoke was billowing from the Kamloops dump this morning. The Mission Flats landfill was closed before 7 a.m. today, May 14, as firefighters responded to the blaze. It won't reopen until tomorrow, at the earliest. The city said smoke from the fire may be toxic and residents have been asked to avoid the area and nearby households have been told to keep their windows closed. What caused the fire in the metals area of the yard isn't clear.
