A BC teacher who made a Grade 8 student cry after they told them they couldn't use the bathroom has been suspended for five days.
According to a Dec. 17 BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, the teacher was working at an independent school when the incident happened in 2023.
The decision said the Grade 8 student asked for permission to use the bathroom and explained the reason why, but the teacher denied the request.
"Failing to allow (the) student to use the bathroom as requested resulted in a very embarrassing situation for (the) student which caused (the) student to cry," the decision said.
The teacher began teaching in 2006 but their name or where they were teaching wasn't given in the decision.

Following the incident the teacher resigned.
Two years prior, the school had issued a letter of expectation to the teacher.
"There is no place for sarcasm, belittlement or shame in the learning and work environment at the school," the letter read. "When students ask to use the bathroom, the teacher must allow them to do so. If the teacher had concerns about a student's use of the bathroom, or found a worrying pattern of bathroom use requests, the teacher was to discuss this with a supervising adult rather than the student."
The teaching regulator said the teacher had previously been told to allow students to use the bathroom and the teacher's conduct did not "foster" the student's mental and physical well-being.
"The teacher failed to create a positive classroom environment for students," the regulator said.
The teacher signed a consent agreement admitting to their behaviour and lost their licence for five days.
