Kelowna RCMP have arrested all five youths identified as “aggressors” in an assault on a young girl near Gyro Beach this past weekend.
A girl was violently attacked in a swarming incident near Gyro Beach on Lakeshore Drive in Kelowna at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. Video of the assault circulated online showing the girl being beaten unconscious, covered in dirt and spat on. There were approximately 25 people who witnessed the attack and only two of them intervened by phoning police.
RCMP identified five youths as “aggressors” in the attack and arrested three of them on Tuesday. The two remaining suspects were arrested on Thursday.
All five youths have been released with strict conditions. Police will be monitoring them to ensure they comply with the terms of their release and attend future court dates.
Police have not said what charges will be forwarded to Crown prosecutors.
RCMP continue to ask people not to share the video of the attack.
“The victim along with police are asking anyone who has video of the incident to please stop circulating and playing the video,” RCMP Sgt. Laura Pollock said in a media release. “We are asking everyone to abide by the victim’s wishes as the recirculation of the video is traumatic to all involved.”
The investigation involves youths so Kelowna RCMP said it will not be providing any more updates on the case.
