The annual Pride float down the channel in Penticton goes this weekend.
The fifth annual South Okanagan Similkameen Pride Fruit Float on Saturday, July 20, celebrates diversity and inclusivity and welcomes all members of the community to join in the fun.
“People have come with Pride-themed swimwear they created themselves, like tattoos, stickers or face-paint all over their bodies. Some people come wrapped in the flags they own,” Heather Adamson with the SOS Pride Society said.
Partnered with the Coyote Cruises, river tubes for attendees can be rented ahead of time for use and a bus will be provided at the end of the float for transportation back to the launch point. Guests are also invited to bring their own tubes to use.
The bus will make a stop halfway down the channel if attendees do not want to finish the course and can opt out early. The event starts at 12 p.m. for dancing and socializing and the official launch time is 12:30 p.m.
In past years participants have brought inflatable rainbow unicorns and other unconventional floaties to float down the channel in style. About 50 to 100 people are expected to show up.
There will be merchandise for purchase at the beginning of the event including pride sunglasses, fans, flags, earrings and pins.
