A Penticton resident doing night patrol for SOS Security is used to seeing deer roaming around the streets in the wee hours, and a few nights ago a herd of them did something amusing.
Jamie Walker took a video as a herd of deer crossed the street single file appearing to use the crosswalk properly at the corner of Atkinson Street and Okanagan Avenue at around 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.
“I saw this group during my patrol, I actively look for moving objects,” he said. “Most of the groups recognize the patrol car, I drive a hybrid, they like the quiet.”
Only one of many deer walk outside the walkway, and the last one to cross pauses to look at the camera.
Walker said it isn’t the first funny thing he has seen deer do at a crosswalk.
“I’ve seen a buck activate the crosswalk signal next to the mall, it hit the button with its horn,” he said. “I often see deer use the bike lanes to avoid people and traffic, they’re very smart and sociable, Okanagan wildlife has lots to offer.”
