Kamloops set to promote proposed performing arts centre with Celebration of the Arts

The City of Kamloops is hosting a new arts show downtown to promote a performing arts centre. Build Kamloops Celebration of the Arts will be held at the site of the planned multi-million dollar venue, which is currently a parking lot. "This event is for everyone and will have something for everyone, just like the Kamloops Centre for the Arts will," City cultural services and events manager Dusan Magdolen said in a news release. "Our goal is to showcase the varied opportunities the Kamloops Centre for the Arts will offer in a fun, unique, experiential way." The open-air arts show is scheduled for July 29 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at 393 Seymour Street. It will showcase local arts and culture organizations, according to the City news release. Visitors will find live music and entertainment, interactive and experiential displays at the show. There will also be food and drinks at the event, along with speeches from "local dignitaries." Later this year, voters will be asked for their blessing as the City looks to borrow millions for the project, although the mechanism for that decision isn't yet clear. As has been attempted in the past, the City may ask residents to cast their votes in a referendum or it may go through an alternate approval process, which would only require naysayers to sign a petition opposing the project. For the July arts show the City partnered with the Kamloops Symphony, the Kamloops Film Society, the Kamloops Art Gallery, the Kamloops Museum and Archives and the Western Canadian Theatre. It's sponsored by Kelson Group, whose owners Ron and Rae Fawcett have longtime been supporters of the planned performing arts centre. “The Build Kamloops Celebration of the Arts is more than just a celebration; it is a catalyst for change, growth, and enrichment that will contribute to a legacy in our community. Together, we can turn this vision into a promising reality, ensuring that Kamloops continues to thrive as a vibrant cultural and economic hub," Magdolen said.
