There were two suspicious fires in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park near Vernon last week. RCMP were alerted about a pair of brush fires in the Coldstream park around 2:50 p.m. on June 12, according to an RCMP media release issued today, June 17. The first fire was earlier in the day near the Cosens Bay entrance and the Coldstream Fire Department handled the situation, but then the second fire was reported further into the park and fire officials decided to notify police. “Despite the recent rain, it has been a relatively dry spring,” Vernon RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tania Finn said in the release. “The risk of a fire is already heightened and we are asking all park users to be extra vigilant.” RCMP said both fires are suspicious and believed to be human caused. Officials used a drone to search the park trails and police checked people in the area, but no suspects were identified and the investigation continues. Anyone with information about these fires is asked to contact Const. Mikolajewski at 250-545-7171.
