BC Highway Patrol have impounded more than 225 vehicles for speeding in the Kelowna area this year, and noted five instances of excessive speeding in June.
Drivers have been caught going roughly double the speed limit in Kelowna and their vehicles were impounded along with hundreds of dollars in fines, according to an RCMP media release issued today, June 21.
The top five worst Kelowna speeders in June have been: a Chevrolet Camaro going 111 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, a Honda Accord going 143 km/h in a 60 km/h, a Kia Forte going 110 km/h in a 50 km/h, an Acura RSX going 188 km/h in a 110 km/h, and a Cadillac Escalade going 148 km/h in a 90 km/h.
“Excessive speed is defined as a vehicle travelling more than 41 km/h over the posted speed limit. Any officer who observes a vehicle travelling at an excessive speed, whether privately or commercially owned, must impound the vehicle for seven days at the owner’s expense,” BC Highway Patrol Cpl. Melissa Jongema said in the release.
RCMP want people to know officers will be targeting excessive speeders and impaired drivers throughout the summer.

“Speed is one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal collisions. Please slow down, obey the posted speed limits this summer, and drive safe,” Jongema said.
The fine for going 41 km/h to 60 km/h over the speed limit is $368, and if a driver is caught going more than 60 km/h over the limit they can get a $483 fine. Fines are on top of a seven day vehicle impound fee which can be more than $1,000.
