Police were kept busy on Canada Day in Kelowna, but no serious crimes were reported.
Kelowna RCMP officers responded to approximately 170 files, including theft, impaired driving, missing persons and cause disturbance, on the night of July 1 continuing into the morning of July 2, according to an RCMP media release.
Officers arrested 15 people for causing a disturbance for public intoxication. Three impaired drivers were also taken off the road and were fined with immediate roadside prohibitions. All missing persons have since been located.
Throughout the day and into the night officers were seen patrolling in vehicles, on foot, on bikes and boats while enforcing the Liquor Control and Licensing Act as necessary to ensure a safe night for all.
“Having a significant police presence throughout the city, especially in our downtown core, was instrumental not only in monitoring the influx of Canada Day participants, but in socializing with them and offering a sense of safety for the thousands of participants taking in the long weekend celebrations,” Kelowna RCMP media liaison officer Cpl. Michael Gauthier said in the release.
RCMP officers and member of the City of Kelowna’s Community Safety Department worked as partners to ensure a safe and happy celebration for all to enjoy.
“We commend all of our officers from near and far, and key partners including the City of Kelowna who collaborated with the Kelowna RCMP to prepare and deliver a safe and fun Canada Day for all,” Cpl. Gauthier said.
Always report crime or suspicious activity whenever you can safely do so by calling 9-1-1 in case of emergency. In cases of non-emergency, or when a crime has already been committed, report the incident to the Kelowna RCMP non-emergency line at 250-762-3300.
