Kelowna still has bylaws for cannabis producers and retailers from before legalization, and the city plans to update those.
The city has an outdated bylaw regarding cannabis businesses from 2014, which still uses terminology like Medical Marihuana Producer, six years after legalization.
The proposal to repeal the outdated bylaw and implement new regulations that meet federal and provincial standards is on the agenda for the council meeting, Nov. 18.
The new cannabis licensing bylaws would make sure that cannabis growers and retailers are meeting requirements for things like waste management, water usage and ventilation for odour control.
The new bylaw would also update the terminology to cannabis rather than the misspelled marihuana. The amendments would update the annual licensing fees to $650, which is the same as the fee for liquor stores.
City staff said in the report going to council the goal is to streamline licensing for cannabis businesses, address gaps in the bylaws and make sure the fees are aligned with other businesses.
Cannabis businesses that want the opportunity to comment on the proposed changes can reach out to the city.
