One man was taken into custody in Kamloops after heavily-armed police were called to a West End apartment building.
Kamloops RCMP had Clarke Street blocked off as a man barricaded himself inside the building around noon on June 4.
An officer at the scene said it was initially a mental health call that prompted the response. A police dog and the Emergency Response Team were then called in as he was believed to have a weapon. She didn't say what kind of weapon he had.
A neighbour who watched it unfold said she initially saw the man outside yelling at two police officers. They tried to arrest him and one officer tried to use pepper spray, but the man fled into the apartment building.
That's when more officers began to file into the dead-end street and filled up the block. The sound of a flash bang could be heard throughout the neighbourhood as police tried to get the man out of the building.
The neighbour didn't provide her name, but said she has safety concerns for her two children.
"I just want to know if I should bring my kids inside when he's out," she said, adding that it's the second police response to a weapon-related call to that street within a few weeks. She wasn't sure if it was related to the same apartment building as the entire street was closed that time, and she couldn't get close to her home or the target of the police response.
Another neighbour, Jake Wetzel, said neighbours suspect the apartment is associated with property crime in the area and possible drug dealing.
