A man in Kelowna was injured when he collided with a truck while avoiding police on a bike.
Now, the Independent Investigations Office of BC, the province’s civilian police watchdog, is investigating the RCMP’s actions in the incident, according to a press release from the IIO.
Kelowna RCMP officers were conducting patrols in the downtown core when they spotted a man known to police riding a bike around 5:20 a.m. on Dec. 11.
The man quickly left on the bike and tried to cross Harvey Avenue, but he collided with the side of a westbound semi truck flat deck.
Police believe the man was trying to avoid the officers since he had several outstanding arrest warrants.
The man was given first aid before he was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
Since the IIO is investigating the incident it will not be releasing any more information.
There is no investigation into the driver of the truck since the office doesn’t think their actions factored into the crash.
