A 51-year-old woman from Squamish has been charged with terrorism offences after she allegedly left Canada to join ISIS.
The Pacific Region RCMP Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team arrested Kimberly Polman yesterday, according to a press release from police.
Polman has been charged with one count of leaving Canada to participate in activity of a terrorist group, and one count of participation in activity of a terrorist group.
"The success of this investigation is directly attributable to the work done by our dedicated investigators and the strength of our policing and intelligence partnerships. Along with our Canadian and International partners, the RCMP remains committed to combating violent extremism both in Canada and abroad,” the enforcement team’s Supt. Jag Dhot said in the release.
These charges are the result of an ongoing investigation into allegations that Polman went to Syria to join ISIS in 2015.
She was repatriated to Canada in October 2022 with a series of bail conditions, and she has been subject to a terrorism peace bond since November 2023.
“Policing partners, local communities and families are all key in the successful identification, prevention and disruption of terrorist activities, as well as individual disengagement from violent extremism,” Dhot said.
Polman is set to appear in court in Vancouver on August 2. Police are not providing more details since the case is now before the courts.
