A collision killed four people when a passenger truck crashed into a semi truck on Highway 6 on the weekend.
Slocan Lake RCMP responded to a report about a collision north of Hills, B.C., around 5:50 p.m. on July 5, according to a press release. Hills is a small community at the northern tip of Slocan Lake, roughly four hours east of Kelowna, by car.
The passenger truck crossed the centre line, and the semi attempted to avoid a collision but it was carrying 100,000 lbs. of timber.
The semi’s trailer hit the ditch, causing the semi to flip and the load hit the passenger truck.
The semi caught fire but witnesses were able to rescue the driver.
The four people in the passenger truck died in the crash, and police are not releasing details regarding their identity.
“Tragically, the occupants of the truck, all from Nelson, BC, did not survive the collision,” Cpl. James Grandy said in the release. “RCMP offer their condolences to the family and thank the witnesses for their assistance at the scene.”
The timber scattered across the highway during the collision and blocked both lanes of the highway. The road was closed for 11 hours so police could investigate and the debris could be cleared. It's not known why the truck crossed the centre line.
The semi driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
BC Coroners Service and Slocan Lake RCMP are still investigating.
