The owner of a small renovation company in Kamloops is running a contest to help a family in need and encourage the community to think about the needs of others.
Sascha Porteous is the owner of Live Timber, a company he started eight years ago that he operates along with two full-time employees.
This month Porteous is doing a home improvement giveaway worth $10,000.
“I’ve received so much support in my life from friends, family and the community,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about a way to give back and make an impact on someone’s life who doesn’t have the same level of help and resources available.”
He said the prize might go to building an extra room for a growing family in need or making a home accessible for a resident with mobility issues and is asking the community to nominate a deserving recipient who could really benefit from it.
“Our homes are places where you want to go and feel comfortable and safe and for some people a home renovation can make a big impact on their lives.
The initiative not only directly benefits a family in need, it gets people thinking about the needs of others.
“We’ve become a little self-centred in this society, I’m guilty of that so in nominating someone else it will encourage people to slow down and think about the needs of others, and of helping one another a bit more."

Made up of himself and two full time employees the small company has changed its focus over the years from custom furniture making to renovations.
