iN VIDEO: Pilot captures aerial view of out-of-control wildfire near Kamloops

A Kamloops pilot flew high above a wildfire south of the city recording video of its perimeter and the far-reaching smoke plumes from the Thompson Plateau.

Jan Nademlejnsky flew over the Ross Moore Lake wildfire on Sunday, July 23, while the blaze was roughly 12 kilometres south of Kamloops.

He filmed the 127 kilometre flight and posted it to YouTube yesterday. The video also shows the thick blanket of smoke that covered Kamloops that morning.

The wildfire was discovered on Friday and quickly grew to 2,600 hectares as it moved northeast toward Kamloops.

More than 300 properties in the area have been evacuated with others on evacuation alert.

The wildfire is now about 10 kilometres from Kamloops with BC Wildfire Service crews taking advantage of the cool weather so far this week to build fire guards on the northern flank.

One structure, described as a recreational building, has been lost to the fire so far, according to regional district chief administrative officer Scott Hildebrand.

It was burning at a low intensity yesterday, July 25, but it could increase in activity again as temperatures in the Kamloops area approach 30 Celsius this week and into next week.
