RCMP investigating data breach at Big White Ski Resort

Current and former employees of Big White Ski Resort have been sent a letter about a data breach that happened in September and may have exposed their personal data.

Big White Ski Resort president Peter Plimmer signed the undated letter that was posted on a Big White community Facebook page today, Dec. 16.

“We don’t have a comment,” senior vice-president Michael J. Ballingal said when contacted by iNFOnews.ca. “It’s a matter with the RCMP and we won’t have a comment until the investigation is over.”

When asked how many employees might be affected, he requested that no further questions be asked.

The posted letter said that an unauthorized intrusion into their servers probably happened in the first half of the year and malware was attached. It said the unauthorized intrusion likely happened between Sept. 7 and 10.

The intruder, or intruders, may have been able to access personal and banking information attached to the employee files.

As soon as the breach was discovered the servers were disconnected from external connections and the data moved to safe backup systems, the letter said.

“We have been working with a leading cybersecurity provider to isolate the malware from our current operating systems and are actively monitoring our systems to safeguard all personal information stored within it,” the letter reads.

The letter advised current and former employees to monitor their bank statements for unauthorized spending and keep an eye out for suspicious emails that may be trying to get more personal information.
