Suspect hits officer, drives through spike belt before arrest near Salmon Arm

A man wanted on multiple warrants was found in a vehicle by Salmon Arm RCMP yesterday afternoon, but he led police on a chase before his arrest.

Police say the man was found on 3 Street Southwest, where an officer used a police car to block his escape from a parking lot on Feb. 21.

"The suspect driver then backed into a fence after bumping the police car out of his way and struck the officer with the vehicle as he fled the parking lot," a Salmon Arm RCMP news release reads.

The suspect was found "a short time later" several kilometres away, near Chistison Road and 50 Street SW, where he sped through a check point and over a spike belt.

Despite the spike belt working as intended, the suspect continued to lead police on four "disintegrating" tires until crashing in a ditch near Silver Creek, southwest of Salmon Arm, according to the news release.

Police say the man resisted but was arrested at the scene.

He is expected to appear in Salmon Arm Law Courts today, Feb. 22, answering for charges of assaulting a police officer with a weapon, dangerous driving and flight from police.

He is also facing nine other arrest warrants including motor vehicle and criminal offences, stemming from incidents in 2020 and 2021, according to Salmon Arm RCMP.

The officer struck in the parking lot suffered minor injuries, but resumed his duties after going to hospital, according to Salmon Arm RCMP.
