SUV collides with trailer in West Kelowna, flips, lands on its wheels

Emergency crews blocked traffic along Westsyde Road Friday night after an SUV collided with a flat deck trailer on the roadside.

Garret Sundby, who owns the trailer, was walking home with his dog and happened to watch the collision around 10 p.m., June 10.

"She hit the back corner of my trailer and she was up in the air," he said. The trailer was forced several feet from its place.

The SUV landed on its roof and rolled back over onto its wheels, facing the opposite direction, he said.

The driver was heading southbound when the crash occurred in the 4400 block of Westsyde Road.

Sundby was at the vehicle within a few seconds and said the driver walked out, seeming to be okay.

Emergency crews were on the scene, keeping both directions closed until around 11 p.m. once a tow truck loaded the SUV to take it away.

It's not clear what caused the accident.

That block of Westsyde Road has a 60 km/hr speed limit but Sundby said drivers often speed much faster. The curves and blind corners, however, can make the route more dangerous, especially for Sundby, whose driveway backs Westsyde Road.

The Kelowna RCMP could not be immediately reached for comment Saturday morning.
