4 uncontained wildfires burning in Thompson, Okanagan, Shuswap

Three new wildfires were discovered yesterday, bringing the total number of uncontained wildfires in the Interior up to four.

The largest wildfire in the Interior, burning in the North Shuswap near Horseshoe Bay, is currently listed at 18 hectares in size and is classified as out of control. There are 20 B.C. Wildfire Service personnel on site today, May 1, the same as previous days, said fire information officer Shaelee Sterns.

Another wildfire was spotted by Monte Lake area residents last night, April 30. The wildfire is located at the 6-7 kilometre mark of the George Creek Forest Service Road, to the west of Monte Lake and is 0.3 ha in size. It is suspected to be human caused, according to the wildfire service’s fire map.

Another fire, discovered April 26,at the 16-km mark along the George Creek FSR, is under control at 0.1 ha.

Two other small fires were discovered yesterday. One near Peachland at the Drought Creek and Highway 97C intersection is listed at 0.1 ha, the same size as yesterday, and another to the northeast of Savona, north of Highway 1, is 0.6 ha in size.

Sterns did not have additional information on the wildfires but said more information will be available later this morning.
