B.C. records more than 9,000 new COVID cases in three days

The Interior Health region recorded over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases from Dec. 31 to Jan. 3.

The B.C. Ministry of Health recorded at total 9,332 new cases across the province, according to a Monday news release.

The  report includes a total 1,185 in the Interior region through the three day period, which was topped by 1,797 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region and 4,859 in the Fraser Health region.

Much fewer cases were reported in the Northern Health region with 374, and there were 1,117 in the Island Health region.

Provincial health minister Adrian Dix and provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry are expected to present case counts, along with vaccinations, hospitalizations and deaths at a press conference tomorrow, Jan. 4.

As last reported on Dec. 31, there were 220 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 73 in intensive care.

Thirty-eight of those in hospital were in the Interior Health region at that time, including 24 in intensive care.

Booster shots continue to be rolled out in B.C., with over 900,000 people having recieved their third vaccine dose as of Dec. 31.

Individuals are recieving invitations to get their boosters, which has so far included seniors, healthcare workers, immune compromised individuals and other targetted groups.

The ministry of health is planning to deliver 800,000 more doses in the coming weeks that will soon recieve their invitations.
