Broken gas line forces evacuation of Kelowna school and daycare

Glenmore Elementary School in Kelowna was evacuated after a contractor broke a gas line while digging with heavy equipment on Lowland Street today, March 15.

Kelowna Fire Department was alerted to the situation shortly after 11:30 a.m.

Parents were notified to pick up their children at the south end of the school.

A daycare north of the school was also evacuated and neighbouring residents are “sheltering in place,” according to a Kelowna Fire Department news release.

FortisBC is onsite and monitoring gas levels.

“Crews are still on scene and the public is requested to stay clear of the area to allow workers to safely mitigate the incident,” the news release, issued about 2:30 p.m., says.
