Expect flight delays at Kelowna airport due to winter weather

With up to 15 centimetres expected in the Thompson-Okanagan region today, travellers can expect flight delays and cancellations.

Departures to Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto at the Kelowna International Airport have been delayed and so have arriving flights.

The Okanagan could see up to 15 cm of snow today, according to a snowfall warning from Environment Canada. Snowfall warnings are also in effect for highways across the Interior.

“An atmospheric river moving across the Okanagan is bringing wet snow to the region. Wet snow will continue tonight before transitioning to periods of rain Friday morning," according to the weather office. "Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult.”

Cassie Brannagan, communications officer with the Kelowna airport said they are currently experiencing winter weather conditions and are asking passengers to check with their airlines for the most up-to-date information.

Crews are out clearing the snow to keep runways clear “so we’re not experiencing too many delays. We can’t predict the weather though and we’re hoping it will short-term,” Brannagan said.

In Kamloops, the airport is also encouraging travellers to check the flight status of the planes before heading to the airport.

“Our winter opts team has worked hard to ensure that operations continue as normal,” according to a Tweet from the airport.

As of this morning, Nov. 4, no arriving or departing flights were delayed at the Kamloops airport.
