Expect smoky skies in Kamloops, Lytton area

Environment Canada is continuing to issue a special air quality statement for the Interior including Lytton and Kamloops due to wildfire smoke.

In the next 24 to 48 hours, the South Thompson and Fraser Canyon South, including Lytton and Kamloops, are likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke, according to a statement by Environment Canada.

Conditions may vary as wind patterns change throughout the day and can change quickly over short distances.

"Wildfire smoke is a natural part of our environment but it is important to by mindful that exposure to smoke my affect your health," according to the agency.

Environment Canada warns that people with pre-existing health conditions such as respiratory infections, older adults, pregnant women, infants, children and sensitive individuals are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.

Wildfire smoke exposure and COVID-19 both cause respiratory symptoms like dry cough, sore throat and difficulty breathing so people are encouraged to use the B.C. COVID-19 Self-Assessment Tool to help determine whether further assessment or testing for COVID-19 is required, according to Environment Canada.

Visit the federal website for more information on wildfire smoke risks and the province's website for current air quality.
