Kelowna children’s band nominated for JUNO award

A Kelowna children's band known for blending rock 'n’ roll, blues and soul has been nominated for a prestigious Canadian music award.

The Oot n' Oots announced they were nominated for a JUNO award in the children’s album of the year category for their latest album Ponderosa Bunchgrass and the Golden Rule.

The band is comprised of Ezra, Ari, Gabe and Matthew Cipes, known for their ownership and operation of Summerhill Pyramid Winery, along with Erza’s daughter Ruth.

“We were incredibly happy, we all had a big group hug,” Ezra said. “It’s a very nice recognition. Someone told us to tune in and watch so we got a little hint to tune in and watch so we got a little hint that we might be nominated.”

The winner will be announced at the JUNO award ceremony, May 15, in Toronto and the whole band will be attending the event, he said.

Ezra bests describe their band as “truly all-ages music” with “good vibrations” and “joy.”

They draw on inspiration from all of rock n’ roll's history, including Motown, soul and R&B up to modern influences with their lyrics created by the influences of the children around them, Ezra said.

The vocals from Ruth, now 15, were recorded when she was 12 and 13 as the album took two years to make as it was mostly made during the Christmas holidays.

Their next plans are to create music videos for the entire album.

The Oot n' Oots will be performing in Penticton at the Ignite the Arts Festival April 2 and 3, the Venables Theatre in Oliver, May 7, and in Trail at the Charles Bailey Theatre, May 8.
