Merritt hospital evacuated due to suspected gas leak

Merritt's hospital has been evacuated today, June 17, due to a suspected gas leak.

The Nicola Valley Hospital in Merritt is currently closed until further notice due to the gas leak, according to the tweet from Interior Health.

"Patients and staff have been safely evacuated."

Fortis B.C. was called to the building early this morning and the cause of the odour reported was not gas-related and there were no gas readings outside hospital, Diana Sorace with Fortis said.

If residents need emergency care, they are being asked to call 9-1-1 or visit the emergency departments at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops or Kelowna General Hospital.

The Merritt Fire Department said the incident has been turned over to Interior Health.
