Petition demands end to pay parking for workers at B.C. hospitals

A B.C. nurse is calling for the end of pay parking for all health-care workers at B.C. hospitals.

A change.org petition, called "Petition to Stop The BC Ministry of Health from charging Health Care Workers for parking" has already gathered more than 1,000 signatures since its creation, Feb. 7, by "BC Nurse" in Victoria.

The petition is addressed to Health Minister Adrian Dix and asks him to cease the re-installation of the pay parking requirement for health-care workers across the province.

Workers will again be required to pay for parking at B.C. health-care facilities starting March 4 following a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Instead of charging health-care workers, who do not have the option of working from home during the pandemic, why not provide a free parking pass for them to display in their car," the petition suggested.

"Not all of the health care facilities can be experiencing this problem, because many have a parkade with fob access. Health authorities are also charging their staff for parking when staff are on vacation, off sick, and working over-time."

The petition is also encouraging residents to email Dix directly.
