Snowfall alerts issued for Coquihalla and Hope-Princeton highways

Light snow today, Dec. 1, is expected to increase significantly tonight, triggering highway alerts for the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt and Highway 3 from Manning Park to Princeton. Accumulations of 15 to 20 cm are expected on those highways. “Another frontal system will move onshore tonight and across the interior on Saturday,” the Environment Canada highway alert says. “Flurries will begin this evening and become snow at times heavy overnight. Snow gradually ease to flurries midday Saturday.” An existing frontal system has brought lighter snow to the region overnight. The BC Traveller’s Forecast says 2-4 cm of snow are expected to accumulate from Hope to Merritt today and 2 cm from Merritt to Kamloops. Light snow is expected on the Okanagan Connector but with only about 6 cm accumulating by Saturday afternoon while 2 cm are forecast for Highway 3 today before turning heavy tonight. Snow did fall overnight in Kamloops and the Okanagan with 2-4 cm expected to accumulate by Saturday afternoon. High temperatures are forecast to reach 1 Celsius in Kamloops today and Saturday with overnight lows of -3-4 C. Highs of 0 C are expected in the Okanagan with overnight lows also of -3-4 C. Sun Peaks has recorded 4 cm of snow in the last 24 hours but Big White and Silver Star ski hills show no new snow in that time. All have less than 40 cm of accumulated snow.
