Whiteout conditions expected across Southern Interior

Environment Canada is warning residents of whiteout conditions across the Southern Interior this weekend.

The government agency issued a special weather statement for the South Thompson, Nicola, North Okanagan including Vernon, Central Okanagan including Kelowna, the Shuswap, West Columbia, West Kootenay, Kootenay Lake, East Kootenay, Elk Valley, 100 Mile, Chilcotin and North Thompson.

There is a risk of a snow squall tonight, Feb. 19, through midday Sunday. Weather warnings have also been issued for the Coquihalla Highway from Merritt to Kamloops, the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna and Highway 97 from Clinton to 100 Mile House via Begbie Summit.

"A cold front will move through the B.C. southern interior this afternoon, bringing colder temperatures and leaving the region favourable for snow squalls to develop starting this evening. There is also a potential for thundersnow late this afternoon and early this evening," according to Environment Canada.

When a snow squall develops, a brief period of heavy snow will leave residents with near zero visibility.

"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance," according to Environment Canada.

Alerts and forecasts can be monitored through Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.

DriveB.C. is the province's resource for highway conditions.
