Apex Resort emerges from fire season, ready for ski season

For several days the Keremeos Creek wildfire could be watched live through a webcam at Apex Mountain Resort, but despite the scale of the fire and its proximity to the ski hill, none of the runs were impacted.

It started near the end of July and burned 7,042 hectares, according to B.C. Wildfire Service. It was the largest wildfire of 2022 in the Kamloops Fire Centre, and the communities of Apex and Olalla were both placed under evacuation order while it was active.

“The wildfire did not reach anywhere within our controlled recreation area, so none of the runs look any different,” Apex general manager James Shalman said.

“It was nerve-racking for sure. For two weeks at least.”

Shalman is grateful for the efforts of B.C. Wildfire crews for keeping the community safe.

Looking ahead to the next challenge, Apex needs to find 150 people to work at the resort this winter – something Shalman says has become a greater challenge over the past few years.

The seasonal staffers are normally between the ages of 19 and 25, he said.

“Not sure where that portion of the workforce has gone. We’re struggling a little, but doing what we can to attract people.”

For anyone looking for work, Apex is hosting a job fair at the Lakeside Resort in Penticton for 4 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 2.

Weather-wise, Shalman says this winter’s forecast is looking really good

“Traditionally our best snow years are during a La Niña year,” he said. “And there’s a fairly significant La Niña event expected to happen this winter.”
