B.C. Lions welcoming all genders to cheerleading team for first time

The B.C. Lions football team are looking for both ladies and gentlemen to audition for next season’s dance team.

The word “cheerleader” is noticeably absent from this year’s application, aside from one section where applicants can list their cheerleading experience. Instead, the term “choreographed dance team” is used.

“Calling all dancers – and we mean ALL dancers!” reads the invitation on the Lion’s Facebook page.

“Dancers are not restricted by gender,” reads the criteria.

Applicants must have seven years of dance training and be in good physical condition.

Dance squads for football teams have traditionally had rosters that were all or mostly female.

Anybody interested better hurry – auditions are tomorrow, March 20 at Sprial Dance in White Rock.

This will be the first time male dancers are welcome. Cheerleaders will be returning to the field for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic.
