B.C. teacher reprimanded for 'inappropriate' physical contact with female students

A former B.C. teacher has been barred from reapplying to become a teacher for nine months after he was found to have engaged in "inappropriate" physical contact with female students during extracurricular activities he'd organized.

According to a recently published Dec. 16 B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, Alvin Yik-Bun Lau asked female students at his Burnaby school to volunteer outside of class time for a research project about athleticism.

"During that time he engaged in inappropriate physical contact with them," reads the Consent Resolution Summary.

"Lau used his position as a teacher to create the opportunity to engage in inappropriate physical contact with female students," the decision said. "Lau’s conduct made the students feel very uncomfortable and detrimentally affected their learning environment."

The incidents took place between September 2017 and June 2018.

According to the decision, Lau became a registered teacher in 2011 and stopped teaching in September 2019.

In January 2021, the school district reported Lau to the Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.

He resigned from the Burnaby School District in January 2021 and had his teacher's certificate cancelled in November that year for non-payment of annual fees.

In the Consent Resolution Summary, Lau agreed his behaviour constituted professional misconduct.

He also agreed that he would not apply to have his teacher's certificate back for nine months.

The Ministry of Education said that to protect the students' identity only a summary of the Consent Resolution Summary had been published in this situation.
