B.C. realtor fined $6,000 for false advertising

A B.C. realtor has been fined $6,000 for false advertising after he listed a property saying it was built in 1965 when it was built seven years earlier.

According to an April 21 B.C. Financial Services Authority decision, Harvinder Singh Jawanda, who does business under Harvy Jawanda Personal Real Estate Corporation, listed property in Surrey in 2019 and used incorrect information.

The ad said the property was built in 1965 when it was built in 1958 or 1959 says the decision.

"You failed to take reasonable steps to confirm the information contained in an advertisement you published for real property located," the decision reads.

The ad also said the property had a new roof, new furnace, and new hot water tank, however, a previous listing for the property noted the roof was replaced in 2008, the furnace in 2005, and the hot water tank in 2012.

The B.C. Financial Services Authority fined Jawanda $5,000 for failing to act with reasonable care and skill, and $1,000 for false or misleading advertising.

The decision says Jawanda has 30 days to pay the fine or dispute the penalty.
