B.C. residents vaping more than other Canadians: poll

More than 20 per cent of British Columbians vape, the highest amount in Canada, according to a recent survey, which also showed vaping is more popular with young people than it was two years ago.

According to a Research Co. poll, 21 per cent of B.C. residents vape, which is higher than other provinces with Ontario at 16 per cent and Alberta at 12 per cent.

Vaping is the most popular in the younger cohort with 26 per cent of 18 to 34 years olds in Canada saying they vaped.

The number of people vaping has also increased in the last two years, with 17 per cent of Canadians saying they have vaped in the past 12 months – a seven-point increase from a similar survey conducted in September 2020.

The current regulations around vaping were brought in by the federal government in May 2018 with the Tobacco Act being overhauled.

"The rise in vaping across Canada is accompanied by a drop in support for some of the measures introduced by the federal government in 2018," Research Co. president Mario Canseco said in a press release. "There are double-digit drops in the level of agreement with advertising and flavouring guidelines."

The vast majority of Canadians agree with prohibiting the sale of vaping products to minors, 82 per cent, and 58 per cent agree with banning certain flavours of vaping products, such as cannabis and "confectionery."

Two-thirds of Canadians are in favour of current restrictions which prohibit references that e-cigarettes are healthier than standard tobacco products.

More than 80 per cent of Canadians think vaping products that contain nicotine should display warnings like those used on tobacco products, and 71 per cent, believe vaping should be banned where smoking is prohibited.

The poll also found that vaping isn't an attractive quality in a partner, as half of Canadians said they wouldn't date someone that vaped.
