B.C. teacher reprimanded for losing her temper, grabbing student

A B.C. teacher has been reprimanded for losing their temper and grabbing a student.

According to a March 24 B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, the Surrey high school teacher lost her temper with a Grade 8 student who was being disrespectful and made another pupil cry.

Science teacher Jasmin Kaur was teaching a Grade 8 class in October 2021 when the incident happened.

The decision said Kaur lost her temper at a student who she felt was being disrespectful.

"Kaur raised her voice and said in front of the class that (the) student was not passing Grade 8 science and that every teacher in the School was complaining about (the) student," the decision said. "Kaur also said, in front of the class, that (the) student's elementary school teacher said that (the) student had done no work in elementary school."

Kaur then asked the student to show her workbook to her, but the student refused. Kaur then went into the student's bag and retrieved it.

The science teacher then said she could "not tolerate" the student and told the student to go to the learner support team room.

However, the student refused and Kaur then held onto the student's arm and pulled on it.

Another student interjected when Kaur said that another student wasn't doing their work properly because they were sitting with the disrespectful student.

Kaur spoke to the student that had interjected and made them cry.

"Kaur failed to treat students with dignity and respect," the Commissioner ruled. "Kaur failed to model appropriate behaviour expected of an educator."

Kaur signed a consent resolution agreement admitting that her behaviour was professional misconduct.

Along with the public reprimand Kaur was ordered to take a Creating a Positive Learning Environment course.

Kaur is also barred from disputing any of the details in the consent resolution agreement.
