Conditions are favourable for a rainy and possibly snowy Family Day long weekend in the Okanagan and Kamloops.

Snow flurries have started in the South Okanagan this morning, Feb. 17, with some snow is sticking to the ground.

The Environment Canada forecast calls for a 40 to 60% chance of snow flurries today in the Okanagan, while Kamloops can expect a sunny day. The snow is expected to start in Kamloops tonight with two centimetres forecast.

The forecast through the long weekend in the Thompson-Okanagan region includes flurries and rain showers through to Monday.

In Kamloops today the forecast calls for a high of 5 Celsius and low off -1 C. Vernon is in for a high of 3 C and low of -2 C. Kelowna can expect a high of 5 C and low of -2 C. And Penticton will get a high of 5 C and low of -1 C.

There is also a dust advisory is in effect for Vernon. Environment Canada extended the notice this morning.

The air has high concentrations of coarse particles, and it’s expected to persist until there is precipitation, dust suppression or a change in traffic patterns, the notice says. Busy roads and industrial areas tend to have the highest levels.

“You can help reduce outdoor air pollution by leaving the car at home and using a transportation alternative such as walking, cycling, carpooling or public transportation,” according to Environment Canada.
