Kelowna firefighters douse propane-fuelled suspicious fire at City Park

Firefighters put out a fire in City Park in downtown Kelowna's last night where they found a venting propane tank burning, along with clothes and bicycle tires.

One engine got to the scene around 10:45 p.m. yesterday, April 24, carrying four firefighters, according to a Kelowna Fire Department news release.

RCMP are now investigating the fire as suspicious.

The 20 lb. propane tank and other burning items likely belonged to a person experiencing homelessness, the fire department said.

Firefighters did not say exactly where within the park they found the fire, but the news release does single out the large 1600 Abbott Street property address as the scene of the blaze.

Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters called bylaw officers to clean up the site.

Kelowna Fire Department reminds the public campfires are prohibited within city limits.
