Man arrested following alleged assault in West Kelowna park

A man has been arrested by the West Kelowna RCMP after a suspect threw rocks at a vehicle and allegedly assaulted a woman.

West Kelowna police officers responded to a report of mischief at the entrance to a Gellatly Road park, at 12:28 p.m., Feb. 19.

A man was allegedly observed throwing rocks at a vehicle, causing extensive damage to it. While police officers were on route to the location, they were told the same man had proceeded to assault a bystander in the area, according to the RCMP in a press release.

Once on scene, officers located the suspect, a 24-year-old man, and arrested him for assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and mischief. The victim of the alleged assault, a 66-year-old woman, received non life-threatening injuries including cuts and bruises that were treated at a hospital, according to the RCMP.

“There is nothing to indicate what motivated this act of violence,” states Cpl. Tammy Lobb, media relations officer with the Kelowna RCMP, in a press release. “There is no risk to public safety at this time as the suspect is currently in police custody awaiting his next court appearance."

Anyone who may have witnessed these incidents on Saturday is asked to contact West Kelowna RCMP by calling 250-768-2880 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by leaving a tip online.
