Severe thunderstorms possible in South Okanagan, Similkameen

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the South Okanagan, including Penticton, and the Similkameen this afternoon.

The conditions are just right for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon, Aug. 22.

The meteorologists say the thunderstorms are capable of generating strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain, along with lightning.

“Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches,” the weather watch reads. “Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.”

Severe weather watches are issued when the atmospheric contains are favourable for the thunderstorms, Environment Canada says.
