Snowfall warning continues for Coquihalla; valley bottoms in Okanagan, Kamloops will stay mostly dry

The winter snowfall warning that’s bringing up to 40 centimetres of snow into the Coquihalla Summit by tomorrow is not expected to bring much in the way or rainfall to Kamloops or the Okanagan.

“That’s more of a localized effect,” Environment Canada meteorologist Colin Fog told iNFOnews.ca today, April 4. “There’s lots of snow through that route, especially at the higher elevations but, once you get over the summit and towards Merritt, things will quiet down and dry out and you’ll see that rain shadow. I wouldn’t expect that to move into the Okanagan.”

There’s still a chance of some “spits” of rain in the Okanagan this morning, he said, but it should clear by the afternoon. Kamloops will likely be drier.

A high pressure system should start building on Wednesday, bringing temperatures in the 17 Celsius to 18 C range in Kamloops on Thursday and Friday, with highs of 14 C in the Okanagan.

That system is expected to break down on Friday with highs of only about 10 C on the weekend.

“You’ve got a couple of days coming up that you can enjoy but, after that, it looks a little crummy through the weekend,” Fog said.
