Vernon's Canada Day drone show cancelled at last minute

Canada Day drone show show went ahead in Kamloops to mixed reviews Drone shows were set to replace fireworks for Canada Day this year in Kamloops and Vernon as a means to reduce fire hazards, but the show in Vernon didn’t get off the ground and the one in Kamloops was met with mixed reviews. The show in Vernon was supposed to be the first of its kind in the Okanagan https://infotel.ca/newsitem/drones-replacing-fireworks-for-canada-day-in-kamloops-vernon/it105323 , but was cancelled at the very last minute after an essential piece of equipment was damaged. “We’re disappointed, there are a lot of emotions and we’re trying to figure out the best way to move forward,” said president of the Vernon Okanagan Inspired Community Events Society Mayla Janzen, who organized the show. READ MORE:Why we really need you to sign up for our newsletter https://infotel.ca/newsitem/jonesie-how-canadian-news-became-victims-in-its-own-story/it105120 Security was hired in preparation for the drones show at Vernon’s Polson Park and Janzen thought everything was well prepared, but just before the show started at 10 p.m. people on motorized scooters drove through the secured area and ran over an antennae. “We spent some time trying to troubleshoot but after a few minutes I was informed it wasn’t going to work,” she said. “I did an announcement at the bandshell and moved volunteers through the crowds to let everyone know and help get everyone out of the park safely.” Janzen said she will be talking to the drone company about potential alternatives for the cancelled show later this year but doesn’t have details yet. “I feel fortunate about the turnout we had and how positive most of the feedback has been. I feel supported by the community,” she said. Residents posted photos and videos of the event on social media that were met with mixed reviews with numerous residents lamenting the loss of traditional firework shows. "It was awesome for the fifteen minutes of the show, it was short but that's our new generation technology," said Kamloops resident Rachelle Totten. "Yes we want the fireworks back but this the new 2024 and fireworks are dangerous. Time, designs and art go into these shows and talented artists as well. With more time and more practice, it will be better every year."
