Gender pay gap wider in Kamloops than in Okanagan

The gender pay gap is much wider in Kamloops compared to the Okanagan.

Women in Penticton earn 82 cents on the dollar compared to men, and in Kamloops it’s just 72 cents, according to data collected from Statistics Canada showing median wages.

However women from Kamloops earn more than women from Penticton.

In Penticton, the median income for women is $35,200 each year while men are at $42,800. That means women earn 82 cents for every dollar of the men's income.

In Kamloops, woman are paid a median wage of $37,200 annually and men make $51,600 – that adds up to 72 cents on the dollar.

The pay disparity is at 79 cents on the dollar in Kelowna, where woman make an median wage of $37,200 compared to $47,200 for men.

In Vernon, women earn a median wage of $35,200 each year compared to men at $45,200 – 78 cents on the dollar.

The pay disparity is greater in B.C. compared to the rest of Canada, as the median wage for women here $36,000 while men make $47,200, equalling 76 cents on the dollar. Across Canada, the median annual income was $36,800 for women and $46,400 for men, which equals 79 cents.

All data cited was collected from the 2020 Census.
