The woman reported her daughter’s bike was stolen back in April 2018. She told police it was a black and purple Giant brand bike, and provided officers with the serial number.
Five years later, on Oct. 23, Const. Jeff Campbell was on an unrelated call when he spotted an abandoned bike at a local motel. He ran the bike’s serial number through the police database, got a hit, and was able to return the bike to its rightful owner.
“During the course of our duties, police officers regularly come across bikes, some that are really expensive, that are abandoned or suspected to be stolen,” Const. Campbell said in a media release.
RCMP point out it's important to write down a bike's serial number in case it is ever stolen.
“When bike theft victims provide us with a serial number, it makes identifying stolen property possible, so we can return items to their rightful owners and deal with those found in possession of them accordingly,” Cont. Campbell said.
Police encourage people to check serial numbers through the Canadian Police Information Centre database when buying a bike secondhand, to ensure it isn’t stolen.
