Vehicles, buildings removed from Thompson, Coldwater rivers as cleanup efforts continue

Following last November’s atmospheric river events, a backhoe, building and a garage among other debris have been removed from Thompson Nicola rivers.

More than 270 items of debris have been identified and recovery efforts are underway in the Thompson, Coldwater, Nicola, and Coquihalla rivers, according to B.C.'s Environmental Emergency Program in its latest update via Twitter.

Multiple vehicles, a building and a garage were removed from the Nicola River. A backhoe was removed from the Thompson River and shoreline waterway training continues, according to the emergency program, which continues drone reconnaissance flights along the Coldwater River.

In Similkameen and Tulameen waterways, debris removal work commenced on April 3 and wood debris has been removed from the Thompson River and relocated.

In the Fraser Valley, vehicles and a building were removed from the Coquilhalla River while shoreline cleanup crews are removing smaller human-made debris.

Woody debris identified as a public safety threat will be assessed by regulators for approval to remove, according to the emergency program.

In November 2021, flood events across B.C. caused mass evacuations including the entire city of Merritt and the closure of the Coquihalla. The highway has since reopened but cleanup efforts continue in rivers affected.
