Snowfall warning: 10 more inches coming to Southern Interior mountain passes

Snow is forecast to continue through today, Jan. 17 into this evening, triggering an Environment Canada snowfall warning throughout the Okanagan and in mountain passes. The heaviest snow is expected on the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Kamloops and the Okanagan Connector. “A Pacific low pressure system continues to bring snow, at times heavy, into southern BC,” the warning says. “Total snowfall amounts near 15 to 25 cm can be expected before the snow tapers off this evening.” The Fraser Canyon, Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton along with the Nicola, Similkameen and Okanagan regions can expect 10-20 cm of snow. Highway 1 from Rogers Pass to Eagle Pass is forecast to get 10 cm of snow. There is no snowfall warning in effect for Kamloops but the Environment Canada online forecast calls for 10 cm of snow with wind gusts up to 40 km/h near noon. While the temperature is expected to hold steady near -9 C, the wind chill could be -18 C. The Okanagan can expect highs of -11 C in the north rising to -8 C in the south with a wind chill near -18 C. While the snow is expected to ease off on Thursday it is forecast to return again Thursday night and through the weekend. Temperatures should moderate to near the freezing mark on the weekend during the day. Winter storm warnings are in effect from Vancouver Island to the Kootenays with 25-30 cm of snow expected in some areas, being especially heavy in the Fraser Valley and Kootenays.
